  • Find out about the different types of schools and decide which characteristics are most important to you.
  • Consider what you'd like to do once you've finished college. What is your dream job? Think about career possibilities, explore different occupations, and give some serious consideration to planning your career.
  • Review your high school coursework and activities. Colleges will look for challenging coursework, a good grade point average, and extracurricular activities such as sports, volunteer work, and community involvement.
  • Meet with your high school counselor
  • Become involved with activities
  • Strengthen your vocabulary (reading helps)
  • Sign up for Naviance and complete a profile
  • Sign up for College in Colorado and complete a profile
  • Sign up for the College Opportunity Fund
  • Take the PSAT (preparation for SAT Junior year) Plus, if you do particularly well on the PSAT, you may be eligible to receive a National Merit Scholarship. That's quite an honor, and it means money for college that you won't have to pay back!
  • Talk about AP and other honors-level courses
  • Check the NCAA requirements if you want to play sports in college
  • Meet with your high school counselor to talk about your future hopes
  • Speaking of money for college, it isn't too early to start saving. Every little bit counts!
  • Research colleges- both in and out of state
  • Take SAT subject tests in spring
