Senior Blake Yaw has always been a part of Smoky Hill High School sports. He plays for their unified basketball team, sinking 3-pointers like a pro, swims for the Water Buffaloes and stands on the sidelines of every home football game in his jersey, yelling louder than any other player. But in four years as manager of the varsity Buffs, Blake never got the chance to be on the field with his team. All that ended last Friday night at the 41st Smoky Hill Homecoming football game, under the lights at Legacy Stadium.
Right before the official kick-off, both teams took the field with Blake lining up as the starting running back. The ball was snapped, and the quarterback handed off to Blake. With help from his blockers and a few missed tackles by the Hinkley High School defenders - who were in on the moment - Blake ran the ball into the endzone all the way from the 40-yard line. The entire bench emptied to help celebrate Blake’s Homecoming touchdown and the Hill Regiment Marching Band played the fight song.
This is why the Smoky Hill community loves its sports programs. Because Blake, and his team, get what’s really important.
