While many think the purpose of speech and debate is to argue, it is, in fact, an opportunity to gain more knowledge and perspectives of various issues of the world. The Smoky Hill Speech and Debate team has been extremely successful this past year and hopes to continue their success this year with more people who are interested in joining the club. All the team members and coaches are looking forward to another year of hard work and dedication to be the best team that we can be. The coming year looks promising to the team as well; last year, 12 teams qualified to state as well as 7 alternates in various speech and debate events, which is more than Smoky Hill has ever had in the past few years. One of the teams took 4th place, while another came in 7th. In addition, last year’s president qualified for nationals in the Lincoln-Douglas debate. In total, more than 50 people went to 15 tournaments.

The perseverance of the speech and debate team has also led the members to attend camps over the summer to polish their skills. They flew to camps in Kansas and Arizona and learned new strategies that they are eager to test out in competitions and teach to new members that join the team.
Smoky Hill has accomplished being in the top 5 in the district, which is definitely a huge achievement. The team is hoping to spur its prominence in the debate community with the tournament that it plans on holding at Smoky Hill High School in February. It has been years since a tournament took place at this school, and the team will be preparing for this competition.
For those who are interested in joining Smoky Hill’s Speech and Debate team, especially freshmen and sophomores, come to the first meeting on Tuesday, September 13th, at 2:45 p.m. in room 1-14. Information about the different types of debates and speech events will be given at this meeting to help new members decide what type of event they want to join. A second meeting will be held as well on Thursday, September 15th , from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Speech and Debate club meets regularly on Tuesdays and Thursday after school. If a conflict in schedule prevents you from meeting on one or more of those days, talk to the team’s coaches, Mr. Droege and Mr. Trevithick.
