To: Smoky Hill Parent(s):
This year the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) will take place on March 11th, 12th, and 13th. Your student's performance and growth on TCAP are a component of our public accountability system and the results are often used to compare groups of students across Colorado schools and districts. Additionally, TCAP results influence decisions related to curriculum and instruction. With this in mind, we ask that you encourage your child to put forth his/her best effort on TCAP, so that results accurately reflect your student's growth over the past year. Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions related to TCAP. Please refer to the TCAP schedule for detailed information.
How will my student be notified where to report on testing days?
Information concerning testing room assignments will be provided to your student during their social studies class the week of March 3, 2014. We work diligently to place students with one of their current teachers in order to provide a familiar and optimal testing environment.
What will my student need for testing?
We will provide pencils for each student during the testing sessions. Students will use scientific or graphing calculators for math test session 3 on March 13th. We will have some calculators available for use; however, it is recommended that students bring a calculator with which they are familiar.
Snacks: A snack and water will be provided during testing sessions each day.
Breakfast/Lunch: The cafeteria will serve breakfast from 6:40-7:10 a.m. daily. Lunch will not be served.
Can my student bring electronic devices into the testing room?
No. Please remind your student that they may not bring cell phones, iPods, MP3 players or any electronic devices into the testing rooms. It would be best if they left all electronic items at home or in their lockers during testing.
What if my student is absent on a testing day?
All students are urged to take their test during the regular scheduled times. We are required to schedule make-up tests for any students who have missed all or part of the tests. Make-up sessions will be held during the regular school day and will require students to miss classes starting March 14, 2014.
Are all students tested on the TCAP?
Yes. Colorado state law requires that all 9th and 10th grade students take TCAP. TCAP results for all students are included in the public accountability report for Smoky Hill High School. Most students participate in the regular assessment. Some students receive accommodations for TCAP equivalent to those they receive in daily instruction.
What happens to my student's individual results?
TCAP results will be included in your student's permanent file and transcripts. TCAP data is also included in a body of evidence to determine appropriate course level placement for individual students. Please note that students, who score partially proficient on TCAP, may be placed in required review sessions on Wednesday mornings next year.
Do juniors and seniors have school during TCAP testing?
No. Juniors and seniors will not have scheduled classes on the three days of TCAP. Many juniors use these days to visit colleges and universities of interest. Some seniors use this time to prepare for IB and AP exams.
Is transportation provided for my 9th and 10th grade student?
Yes. Buses will pick up students at the regular time and location in the morning. Buses will leave Smoky Hill daily at 11:15 a.m. after testing.
Smoky Hill wishes to thank our PTCO for their efforts to promote the importance of TCAP. The name of each student who demonstrates a diligent effort on all three days of testing and completes the TCAP test successfully will have their name placed in a drawing for: an iPod shuffle, candy or school supplies. We appreciate the efforts of PTCO to support our students at Smoky Hill!
If you have any additional questions about TCAP please contact Sarah Watts (TCAP School Assessment Coordinator) at 720-886-5448.
